WHAT TO EXPECT

Are you new to sailing or being a spectator of the sport? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered & will give you all the information you need to know!

Things to Bring

If you’re new to sailing with us, you may want to consider bringing the following to each event: (this is not all inclusive)

  • Life jacket or personal flotation device
  • Wet or dry suit (if you prefer either) + swimsuit/rash guard/sailing clothes, shoes, hat, sunglasses, etc.
  • Beach wheels
  • VHF radio
  • Water & food
  • Sunscreen
  • Serrated knife
  • Extra equipment: boat parts, line, tools, tape, etc.
  • Camping gear: sleeping bag, pillow, tent, inflatable mattress pad, toiletries
  • Bonine, dramamine, airborne or any other motion sickness medication

Some of our venues will have showers onsite for clean up post sailing. If they don’t our campground/lodging will. The biggest thing to remember is safety and sun protection!

If you’re spectating the sport, consider bringing the following: (this is not all inclusive)

  • Binoculars
  • Camera
  • Water & food
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat, sunglasses
  • Waterproof bag (if going on a chase boat)
  • Life jacket or personal flotation device
  • Bonine, dramamine, airborne or any other motion sickness medication

At most of our events, there is an opportunity to get right up in the action by riding along on a chase boat or being a part of the committee boat. It is important to check with your captain and their safety rules if they require you to have additional equipment on board for safety regulations. Anyone who rides along on a boat must have a flotation device.

Regatta Weekend

Our events are usually ran from Saturday to Sunday, with most members showing up Friday night.

Lodging

Most of our nights conclude at campgrounds. RVs are more than welcome at most locations. In fact our membership can be split almost 50/50 for those who camp and those who own RVs. Camping not your thing? Don’t fret, there are usually hotels/motels or the sort nearby but you would be on your own in securing a place to stay if you choose to bypass the campsite.

The regatta organizers secure lodging for Friday night to Sunday morning. Many of our members will arrive Friday night to start rigging their boats so it’s not as early of a morning for them.

Locations are usually close to some members’ houses as well. It is up to those individuals if they offer up hospitality or showers for use during the weekend. This is generally not posted online but travels by word of mouth so keep your ears open of additional locations to stay.

Meals

Again, be sure to check the event schedule for each specific regatta to determine what meals are included. Generally speaking, you are on your own for breakfast, lunch, snacks and Friday’s dinner. Dinners may be included with your regatta registration fees, or there may be dinner tickets for purchase. It’s important to check the event to determine what meals are offered and if the fee is included in your registration. Some of our venues are set up for cookouts where everyone brings a dish to pass & others are set up at restaurants; either way our Saturday nights are always spent as a group.

Skippers Meetings

These take place the morning before racing to go over sequence & general flags, weather conditions, race course, expected time of first race, or postpone if necessary. You will be able to ask any questions or get clarity on any changes prior to race start. Once this meeting concludes, it’s a final rush to get your sailing gear on, boats on the water and head for committee boat.
